About Caerphilly

Caerphilly (Caerffili) is a principal area in south Wales, immediately north of Cardiff, encompassing valley communities in the historic counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. Covering approximately 278 square kilometres, Caerphilly had a population of approximately 181,000 at the 2022 Census. Caerphilly Castle Caerphilly Castle, at the heart of the town from which the council area takes its name, is the largest castle in Wales and the second-largest in Britain after Windsor Castle; built from 1268 by the Anglo-Norman lord Gilbert de Clare, it was the first fully concentric castle in Britain and a pioneering example of water-based defences, its extensive artificial lakes forming one of the largest man-made bodies of water associated with any medieval castle. Its leaning south-east tower, tilted further from vertical than the Leaning Tower of Pisa as a result of subsidence and damage sustained during the English Civil War, has become one of the castle's most photographed features. Caerphilly Cheese and the Valleys Caerphilly gave its name to Caerphilly cheese, a crumbly, mild white cheese first produced in the area in the 19th century and traditionally favoured by coal miners for its high salt content, which helped replace salt lost through sweat underground, and for its ease of digestion. The valley towns of Ystrad Mynach and Blackwood, along with the wider council area, share a strong industrial heritage in coal and iron production that shaped their development through the 19th and 20th centuries.
