About Angus

Angus is a council area in eastern Scotland, on the North Sea coast between Dundee and Aberdeenshire. Covering approximately 2,182 square kilometres of the fertile Strathmore valley, the Sidlaw Hills, and the Angus Glens, Angus had a population of approximately 116,000 at the 2022 Census, with Forfar as its administrative centre. Glamis Castle Glamis Castle, near Forfar, is the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and the birthplace in 1930 of Princess Margaret; seat of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne since the 14th century, the castle's turreted profile and long association with the family of the late Queen Elizabeth II have made it one of Scotland's best-known stately homes, alongside its more legendary connection to Shakespeare's "Macbeth," in which Glamis is (historically inaccurately) named as the title character's castle. The Declaration of Arbroath Arbroath Abbey, founded in 1178 by King William the Lion and dedicated to St Thomas Becket, was the setting in 1320 for the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath, a letter from Scotland's barons to Pope John XXII asserting Scottish independence from England; its defiant assertion that "for as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, we will never on any conditions be subjected to the lordship of the English" is considered one of the founding statements of the idea of national self-determination and is thought to have influenced the American Declaration of Independence. Arbroath also gives its name to the Arbroath smokie, a traditionally hot-smoked haddock granted Protected Geographical Indication status by the European Union. Angus Beef and the Coast Angus lends its name to the Aberdeen Angus cattle breed, developed in the region and now farmed worldwide for its high-quality beef. Along the coast, the seaside towns of Montrose and Carnoustie combine historic harbours and sandy beaches with championship golf; Carnoustie Golf Links has repeatedly hosted The Open Championship.
