About Aberdeen City
Aberdeen City is a council area and Scotland's third-largest city, situated between the mouths of the rivers Dee and Don on the North Sea coast. Aberdeen had a population of approximately 228,000 at the 2022 Census and is widely known as the "Granite City" for the pale grey granite used to construct much of its historic centre, which glitters with flecks of mica on sunny days, earning it the additional nickname "the Silver City with the Golden Sands." Energy Capital of Europe Since the discovery of North Sea oil in the late 1960s, Aberdeen has developed into one of the world's leading centres for offshore energy, often described as the energy capital of Europe; Aberdeen Harbour, one of the oldest businesses in Britain with records dating to the 12th century, has been transformed by decades of oil and gas activity, and the city is now central to the offshore wind and renewable energy sectors as the North Sea basin matures. Marischal College, in the city centre, is the second-largest granite building in the world after El Escorial in Spain, and now serves as council headquarters. Universities and Old Aberdeen The University of Aberdeen, founded as King's College in 1495, is the fifth-oldest university in the English-speaking world; its historic Old Aberdeen quarter, centred on the crown-spired King's College Chapel and the medieval St Machar's Cathedral, retains a distinct character separate from the granite terraces of the city centre. Aberdeen's two miles of sandy beach, backed by dunes and a Victorian promenade, remain a popular local amenity alongside Duthie Park and its Winter Gardens.
