About Neath Port Talbot
Neath Port Talbot (Castell-nedd Port Talbot) is a principal area in south Wales, spanning from the Swansea Bay coast to the foothills of the Brecon Beacons. Covering approximately 442 square kilometres, Neath Port Talbot had a population of approximately 142,000 at the 2022 Census. Steel and Tinplate Heritage Port Talbot is home to the largest steelworks in the United Kingdom, operated by Tata Steel, whose blast furnaces and rolling mills have dominated the town's economy and skyline since the plant's establishment in the 1950s and remain among the most significant industrial employers in Wales. Aberdulais Falls, a dramatic waterfall on the River Dulais, powered a succession of industries from copper smelting in the 16th century to tinplate manufacturing in the 19th, and was famously painted by J.M.W. Turner in 1796; the site, now cared for by the National Trust, preserves the largest electricity-generating waterwheel in Europe. Margam Park and Afan Forest Margam Country Park, on the edge of Port Talbot, is centred on the ruins of a medieval Cistercian abbey, the Victorian Gothic Margam Castle, and an orangery built in 1787 to house an important collection of orange trees — among the largest such 18th-century structures in Europe. Afan Forest Park, in the valleys to the north, has been transformed from a former coal-mining landscape into one of the leading mountain-biking destinations in the United Kingdom, its trails winding through reclaimed woodland. The actor Richard Burton was born in 1925 in the village of Pontrhydyfen within the council area.
