About Carmarthenshire

Carmarthenshire (Sir Gaerfyrddin) is a principal area in south-west Wales, known as the "Garden of Wales" for its fertile Tywi Valley and rolling green countryside. Covering approximately 2,370 square kilometres — historically the largest county in Wales — Carmarthenshire had a population of approximately 188,000 at the 2022 Census, with Carmarthen, held to be the oldest town in Wales, as its administrative centre. Merlin's Town and Carreg Cennen Castle Carmarthen's Welsh name, Caerfyrddin, is traditionally linked to the legendary wizard Merlin (Myrddin), whose associations with the town — including Merlin's Oak, long said to guard the town's fate — have given Carmarthen a claim to be his birthplace in Arthurian legend. Carreg Cennen Castle, perched dramatically atop a limestone crag above the Tywi Valley, is regarded as one of the most spectacularly sited castles in Britain, with a passage cut into the rock leading to a natural cave beneath the fortress. The National Botanic Garden of Wales and Dylan Thomas The National Botanic Garden of Wales, opened in 2000 near Llanarthne, is home to the Great Glasshouse, designed by architect Norman Foster and containing the world's largest single-span glass structure of its kind, showcasing plants from Mediterranean-climate regions across the globe. Laugharne, on the Carmarthenshire coast, was the home of the poet Dylan Thomas from 1949 until his death in 1953; his writing shed and the Boathouse where he lived overlook the estuary that partly inspired the fictional town of Llareggub in his play "Under Milk Wood."
