Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro) is a principal area in south-west Wales, comprising a peninsula and offshore islands almost entirely encircled by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park — the only national park in Britain defined principally by its coastline, established in 1952. Covering approximately 1,590 square kilometres, Pembrokeshire had a population of approximately 123,000 at the 2022 Census, with Haverfordwest as its administrative centre. St Davids and Pembroke Castle St Davids, on the western tip of the peninsula, is Britain's smallest city, a status derived not from its population of around 1,600 but from its magnificent cathedral, founded in the 6th century by St David, the patron saint of Wales, and rebuilt in its present form from the 12th century; it remains an important site of pilgrimage. Pembroke Castle, a formidable Norman fortress, was the birthplace in 1457 of Henry Tudor, who became King Henry VII in 1485 and founded the Tudor dynasty that ruled England and Wales for over a century. "Little England Beyond Wales" and the Islands Southern Pembrokeshire has long been known as "Little England beyond Wales," a reference to the historically English-speaking character of the area following Norman and Flemish settlement in the 12th century, a linguistic divide from the Welsh-speaking north traditionally marked by the Landsker Line. Off the coast, the islands of Skomer and Ramsey are internationally important nature reserves, hosting some of Britain's largest colonies of puffins, Manx shearwaters, and grey seals, alongside the unique Skomer vole found nowhere else in the world.
