About Ceredigion

Ceredigion is a principal area in mid-west Wales, on the shores of Cardigan Bay. Covering approximately 1,795 square kilometres, Ceredigion had a population of approximately 72,000 at the 2022 Census, with Aberystwyth as its largest town and administrative centre, and is renowned for the strength of its Welsh language and culture. Aberystwyth and the National Library of Wales Aberystwyth, historically a seaside resort and market town, has been a centre of Welsh higher education and culture since the founding of its university college in 1872, making it one of the constituent institutions of the University of Wales. The National Library of Wales, overlooking the town from Penglais Hill, is one of the legal deposit libraries of the United Kingdom and holds the nation's principal collection of Welsh manuscripts, books, and archives, including some of the oldest surviving Welsh-language texts. Aberystwyth Castle, now a ruin, was built by Edward I in the late 13th century as part of his network of Welsh fortifications. Cardigan Bay and Devil's Bridge Cardigan Bay is home to one of only two semi-resident populations of bottlenose dolphins in British waters, drawing wildlife-watching visitors along its coastline. Inland, Devil's Bridge (Pontarfynach) is formed of three bridges built one above another over several centuries — medieval, 18th-century, and Victorian — spanning a dramatic gorge where the Rivers Mynach and Rheidol meet in a series of waterfalls; the narrow-gauge Vale of Rheidol Railway, a steam-hauled heritage line opened in 1902, connects Aberystwyth to the gorge.
