About Wrexham

Wrexham (Wrecsam) is a principal area in north-east Wales, bordering England, and was granted city status in 2022 as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee civic honours. Wrexham had a population of approximately 136,000 at the 2022 Census. St Giles' Church and the Yale Connection St Giles' Church, with its elaborately decorated tower, is regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of Wales; its tower is said to have inspired the design of Harkness Tower at Yale University in the United States, a connection rooted in the burial in the churchyard of Elihu Yale, the East India Company merchant and benefactor after whom Yale University is named. Erddig Hall, a National Trust property on the edge of the town, is celebrated for its unusually well-documented relationship between an aristocratic family and their household staff, whose portraits and verses hang alongside those of their employers. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, carrying the Llangollen Canal 38 metres above the River Dee valley, was designed by Thomas Telford and William Jessop and completed in 1805; the longest and highest navigable aqueduct in Britain, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009 in recognition of its pioneering use of cast iron and its status as a masterpiece of civil engineering. Wrexham AFC, founded in 1864, is the third-oldest professional football club in the world; since 2021 the club has been owned by the actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, whose documentary series "Welcome to Wrexham" brought international attention to the club and the town as it returned to the English Football League.
