About Flintshire

Flintshire (Sir y Fflint) is a principal area in north-east Wales, bordering England along the Dee Estuary. Covering approximately 438 square kilometres, Flintshire had a population of approximately 156,000 at the 2022 Census, with Mold as its administrative centre. Flint Castle and St Winefride's Well Flint Castle, begun in 1277, was the first of the castles built by Edward I during his conquest of Wales, and its historical significance extends beyond its construction: it was here in 1399 that King Richard II surrendered to Henry Bolingbroke (later Henry IV), an episode later dramatised by Shakespeare in "Richard II." St Winefride's Well, in Holywell, has been a site of Christian pilgrimage since at least the 7th century, associated with the legend of a young woman miraculously restored to life by St Beuno after her beheading, with a healing spring said to have sprung up on the spot; often called the "Lourdes of Wales," it is considered one of Britain's oldest continually visited pilgrimage sites. The nearby Greenfield Valley Heritage Park preserves the remains of textile mills once powered by the well's fast-flowing stream. Deeside Industry Flintshire's Deeside area has been a centre of heavy industry for over a century: the former John Summers steelworks at Shotton was once one of the largest integrated steelworks in Europe, and the Airbus wing-manufacturing plant at Broughton, opened in 1939 and now producing wings for the A320 and A350 aircraft families, remains one of Wales's largest employers and a cornerstone of the European aerospace industry.
