About Denbighshire

Denbighshire (Sir Ddinbych) is a principal area in north-east Wales, bordering England. Covering approximately 844 square kilometres from the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the Vale of Clwyd and the north Wales coast, Denbighshire had a population of approximately 96,000 at the 2022 Census, with Ruthin as its administrative centre. Denbigh Castle and St Asaph Cathedral Denbigh Castle, begun in 1282 by Edward I following his conquest of Wales, stands above the historic town of Denbigh and, together with its town walls, guards the entrance to the Vale of Clwyd. St Asaph Cathedral, in the small city of St Asaph, is the smallest ancient cathedral in Britain and traces its foundation to the 6th century; it holds strong associations with Bishop William Morgan, whose translation of the Bible into Welsh, published in 1588, was instrumental in the survival of the Welsh language into the modern era. The North Wales Coast and Loggerheads Rhyl and Prestatyn, on the north Wales coast, developed as popular seaside resorts in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, drawing generations of holidaymakers from across the North West of England with their beaches, promenades, and amusements. Loggerheads Country Park, in the Clwydian Range, preserves the site of a former lead-mining industry within a landscape of wooded limestone gorges and the River Alyn, and forms part of a wider network of protected countryside across the principal area.
