About Conwy

Conwy is a principal area on the north coast of Wales, bordering the Irish Sea. Covering approximately 1,130 square kilometres from the coastal resorts of Llandudno and Colwyn Bay to the mountains of Snowdonia, Conwy had a population of approximately 116,000 at the 2022 Census. Conwy Castle and Town Walls Conwy Castle, built by Edward I between 1283 and 1287 as part of his campaign to subdue Wales, stands beside one of the most complete surviving medieval town wall circuits in Europe — nearly 1.3 kilometres of walls studded with 21 towers, largely intact since their construction; together with the castle, the walls form part of the "Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd" UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Conwy Suspension Bridge, built alongside the castle by Thomas Telford in 1826, was designed with castellated towers to harmonise with the medieval fortress it stands beside. Llandudno and the Great Orme Llandudno, developed as a planned seaside resort from the 1850s, became known as the "Queen of the Welsh Resorts" for its elegant Victorian promenade and pier; the town's connection to Alice Liddell, the child who inspired Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" and whose family holidayed there, is commemorated by an Alice trail and statues around the town. The Great Orme, the limestone headland overlooking Llandudno, contains one of the largest prehistoric copper mines in the world, worked during the Bronze Age some 4,000 years ago, and is now reached by a Victorian cable-hauled tramway and a cable car. Bodnant Garden, in the Conwy Valley, is renowned for its spectacular laburnum arch and extensive collections of rhododendrons and camellias.
