North Lanarkshire is a council area in central Scotland, bordering Glasgow to the west. Covering approximately 470 square kilometres, North Lanarkshire had a population of approximately 341,000 at the 2022 Census, with Motherwell as its administrative centre and Airdrie, Coatbridge, and Cumbernauld among its principal towns. Iron, Steel, and the Ravenscraig Works North Lanarkshire's landscape was shaped by heavy industry: Coatbridge earned the nickname the "Iron Burgh" for its dense concentration of 19th-century ironworks, and the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, built around a former ironworks site, preserves this history with a reconstructed period street and working exhibits.
