About Glasgow City

Glasgow City is Scotland's largest city and a council area in west-central Scotland, straddling the River Clyde. Glasgow had a population of approximately 635,000 at the 2022 Census, making it the largest city in Scotland and one of the largest in the United Kingdom; during the 19th and early 20th centuries it was known as the "Second City of the Empire" for its shipbuilding, engineering, and manufacturing might. Glasgow Cathedral and Charles Rennie Mackintosh Glasgow Cathedral, dating largely from the 13th century, is one of the few Scottish cathedrals to have survived the Reformation substantially intact and holds the tomb of St Mungo, the city's patron saint and founder, whose 6th-century religious settlement gave rise to the city. Glasgow is closely associated with the architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose Art Nouveau masterpiece, the Glasgow School of Art, and other works including the Willow Tearooms helped define the "Glasgow Style" at the turn of the 20th century. The University of Glasgow, founded in 1451, is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world. Kelvingrove and the Burrell Collection Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, opened in 1901, is one of the most visited free museums in the United Kingdom outside London, housing collections ranging from Old Masters to Scottish art and natural history. The Burrell Collection, the eclectic art collection assembled by shipping magnate Sir William Burrell and gifted to the city in 1944, is displayed in a purpose-built gallery reopened after major refurbishment in 2022. Glasgow's transformation from industrial powerhouse to cultural capital was underscored by its hosting of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference in 2021.
