About Perth and Kinross

Perth and Kinross is a council area in central Scotland, spanning from the fertile straths of the Tay and Earn to the southern Highlands. Covering approximately 5,286 square kilometres, Perth and Kinross had a population of approximately 153,000 at the 2022 Census, with Perth — historically known as "the Fair City" — as its administrative centre. Scone Palace and the Stone of Destiny Scone Palace, just north of Perth, stands on the site of Moot Hill, the ancient coronation place of the Kings of Scots, where the Stone of Scone (also known as the Stone of Destiny) was kept until Edward I of England removed it to Westminster Abbey in 1296; Robert the Bruce and later monarchs, including Charles II in 1651, were crowned at Scone, and Perth served as the effective capital of Scotland for much of the medieval period. Blair Castle, near Blair Atholl, is the seat of the Dukes of Atholl and is guarded by the Atholl Highlanders, the only remaining legal private army in Europe, granted the right to bear arms by Queen Victoria in 1844. Killiecrankie and Highland Perthshire The Pass of Killiecrankie, a dramatic wooded gorge on the River Garry, was the site of the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689, an early Jacobite victory over government forces during the first Jacobite Rising; a spot known as the Soldier's Leap commemorates a government soldier's legendary escape across the gorge. Highland Perthshire, to the north and west, includes Loch Tay and the Ben Lawers range, and forms part of the setting for both the Cairngorms National Park and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, whose boundaries extend into the council area.
