East Dunbartonshire is a council area in west-central Scotland, immediately north of Glasgow. Covering approximately 175 square kilometres of affluent suburban towns and rural hill country, East Dunbartonshire had a population of approximately 108,000 at the 2022 Census. The Antonine Wall and Roman Heritage The Antonine Wall, the Roman Empire's north-west frontier built from AD 142, runs through East Dunbartonshire, and the well-preserved remains of a Roman bath house and latrine at Bearsden — associated with a Roman fort that once stood on the site — are among the best-surviving examples of Roman military infrastructure in Scotland; the wall was inscribed as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Bearsden and Milngavie developed in the 19th and 20th centuries as prosperous residential suburbs for Glasgow commuters, drawing families to their green surroundings and well-regarded schools, while Kirkintilloch, an older canal town on the Forth and Clyde Canal, retains a more industrial and commercial character and is nicknamed the "Canal Town." The West Highland Way and Mugdock Milngavie is the official starting point of the West Highland Way, Scotland's first officially designated long-distance footpath, opened in 1980 and running 154 kilometres north to Fort William through some of the country's most dramatic scenery; an obelisk in the town centre marks the start of the route. Mugdock Country Park, on the northern edge of the council area, is centred on the ruins of Mugdock Castle, historic seat of the Graham family, and combines woodland, moorland, and lochs across one of the largest country parks in the Glasgow area.
