About Dundee City

Dundee City is Scotland's fourth-largest city and a council area on the north bank of the Firth of Tay in eastern Scotland. Dundee had a population of approximately 149,000 at the 2022 Census and was traditionally defined by the "Three J's" — jute, jam, and journalism — before reinventing itself in the 21st century as a centre for design, digital media, and biotechnology. Jute, Jam, and Journalism In the 19th century Dundee became the world's leading centre of jute processing, importing raw jute from Bengal and weaving it into sacking and canvas on a scale that earned the city the nickname "Juteopolis"; the Verdant Works, a former jute mill, now preserves this industrial heritage as a museum. James Keiller & Son, founded in Dundee in 1797, is credited with helping popularise marmalade as a commercial product, while DC Thomson & Co., publisher of The Sunday Post and the comics The Beano and The Dandy — home to characters such as Dennis the Menace and Desperate Dan — made Dundee a major centre of the British publishing and comics industry; The Beano, launched in 1938, is the world's longest-running weekly comic still in publication. Discovery Point and the V&A Dundee The RRS Discovery, the purpose-built polar research ship that carried Captain Robert Falcon Scott's British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–04, was constructed in Dundee and now lies permanently berthed at Discovery Point on the regenerated waterfront. Alongside it stands the V&A Dundee, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and opened in 2018 as Scotland's first dedicated design museum, part of a wider waterfront redevelopment that helped Dundee become the UK's first UNESCO City of Design in 2014. Dundee Law, an extinct volcanic plug rising above the city centre, offers panoramic views over the Tay and is crowned by a war memorial.
