West Dunbartonshire is a council area in west-central Scotland, on the northern bank of the River Clyde between Glasgow and Loch Lomond. Covering approximately 159 square kilometres, West Dunbartonshire had a population of approximately 88,000 at the 2022 Census, concentrated in the towns of Clydebank, Dumbarton, and the Vale of Leven. Dumbarton Rock and the Kingdom of Strathclyde Dumbarton Castle sits atop Dumbarton Rock, a volcanic plug overlooking the Clyde estuary, and occupies one of the longest continuously fortified sites in Britain; known to the ancient Britons as Alt Clut, it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Strathclyde from at least the 5th century AD and remained strategically vital through the Wars of Scottish Independence and beyond, guarding the western approach to Glasgow. Clydebank, further east along the river, grew explosively in the late 19th and early 20th centuries around John Brown & Company's shipyard, which built some of the most famous vessels in maritime history, including the ocean liners RMS Lusitania, RMS Queen Mary, and RMS Queen Elizabeth, and the Royal Yacht Britannia. The Clydebank Blitz and the Titan Crane On the nights of 13–14 March 1941, German bombers carried out the Clydebank Blitz, the most devastating air raid suffered by any town in Scotland during the Second World War; of around 12,000 houses in Clydebank, only seven escaped damage entirely, and over 500 people were killed. The Titan Crane, a giant cantilever crane built in 1907 for John Brown's shipyard, was among the first electric cantilever cranes in the world and remains an iconic monument to Clydebank's shipbuilding heritage. The southern shores of Loch Lomond, reached via the town of Balloch, fall within the northern part of the council area.
