The City of Edinburgh is Scotland's capital and a council area in the Lothian region of south-east Scotland. Built around a series of extinct volcanic outcrops, including Castle Rock and Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh had a population of approximately 527,000 at the 2022 Census, making it Scotland's second most populous city after Glasgow. Festivals and Learning Every August, Edinburgh hosts the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world, alongside the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh International Book Festival, and the Military Tattoo on the Castle Esplanade — together drawing millions of visitors and performers from across the globe. The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1583, is one of Scotland's four ancient universities and counts Charles Darwin and Alexander Graham Bell among its alumni; the National Museum of Scotland and the grave of Greyfriars Bobby, the loyal Skye Terrier commemorated by a statue near Greyfriars Kirkyard, are among the city's best-loved attractions.
