About South Lanarkshire

South Lanarkshire is a council area in central Scotland, stretching from the southern suburbs of Glasgow to the Southern Uplands on the border with Dumfries and Galloway. Covering approximately 1,772 square kilometres, South Lanarkshire had a population of approximately 320,000 at the 2022 Census, making it one of Scotland's most populous council areas, with Hamilton as its administrative centre. New Lanark and the Falls of Clyde New Lanark, on the banks of the River Clyde near Lanark, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a remarkably complete cotton-mill village founded in 1786 by David Dale, and developed from 1800 by his son-in-law Robert Owen into a pioneering model of industrial and social reform, providing mill workers with decent housing, free schooling for children, and Britain's first co-operative store — ideas that made New Lanark internationally influential in the development of utopian socialism and the co-operative movement. The village sits beside the Falls of Clyde, a series of waterfalls including the 27-metre Corra Linn, now a Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve renowned for its peregrine falcons. Bothwell Castle and Chatelherault Bothwell Castle, overlooking a bend in the River Clyde, is the largest 13th-century castle in Scotland, built by the Moray family and fought over repeatedly during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Chatelherault Country Park, near Hamilton, is centred on a lavish 18th-century hunting lodge designed by William Adam for the Dukes of Hamilton, restored after decades of dereliction and now a visitor centre for the surrounding parkland and Cadzow Oaks, some of Scotland's oldest trees. The fertile Clyde Valley, running north from Lanark, has long been celebrated for its orchards and glasshouse-grown tomatoes.
