About Moray

Moray is a council area on the Moray Firth coast in north-east Scotland. Covering approximately 2,238 square kilometres from the fertile coastal plain of the Laich of Moray to the Cairngorms foothills and the Spey valley, Moray had a population of approximately 96,000 at the 2022 Census, and is internationally renowned as the heartland of Scotch malt whisky production. Speyside Whisky Country The River Spey and its tributaries flow through the greatest concentration of whisky distilleries anywhere in the world: Speyside is home to more than half of Scotland's malt whisky distilleries, including Glenfiddich and Glenlivet — the world's best-selling single malts — along with Cardhu, Aberlour, and dozens of others, many still using the same pure spring water and traditional pot-still methods established in the 19th century. The Malt Whisky Trail links several of the region's distilleries and heritage sites for visitors, and the Speyside Way long-distance footpath follows the river for 105 kilometres from Buckie to Aviemore. Elgin Cathedral and Findhorn Elgin Cathedral, founded in 1224 and known as the "Lantern of the North," was once one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Scotland before being burned in 1390 by Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan (the "Wolf of Badenoch"), and later dismantled after the Reformation; its substantial ruins, including twin west towers, remain among Historic Environment Scotland's most visited sites. Lossiemouth, the birthplace in 1866 of Ramsay MacDonald, Britain's first Labour Prime Minister, combines a historic fishing harbour with the modern RAF Lossiemouth airbase. The Findhorn Foundation, an intentional community and ecovillage founded in 1962 near the mouth of the River Findhorn, has become internationally influential in sustainable living and eco-architecture.
