East Renfrewshire is a council area in west-central Scotland. Covering approximately 174 square kilometres of suburban settlements, farmland, and moorland on the southern edge of the Glasgow conurbation, East Renfrewshire had a population of approximately 95,000 at the 2022 Census. The council area — created in 1996 from the districts of Eastwood and the southern part of Renfrew — is consistently ranked as one of the most prosperous and highest-performing local authority areas in Scotland for educational attainment, quality of life, and economic activity. Character and Principal Settlements East Renfrewshire occupies the rolling land between the southern Glasgow suburbs and the moorland of the Fenwick Moor, bordered to the south by East Ayrshire and to the east by South Lanarkshire. The principal settlements — Newton Mearns, Giffnock, Clarkston, Barrhead, Thornliebank, Eaglesham, and Uplawmoor — form a broadly residential landscape with strong commuter connections to Glasgow city centre. Newton Mearns and Giffnock in particular are known as affluent residential areas, attracting families drawn by the area's consistently high-performing schools and green suburban character. Barrhead is the only significant town with a distinct working-class and industrial heritage — it was an important centre of bleaching and textile production in the 18th and 19th centuries, and its Shanks sanitary ware factory (founded 1851) was one of Scotland's best-known industrial enterprises. Eaglesham Village Eaglesham — on the eastern edge of the council area — is one of the finest planned 18th-century villages in Scotland: laid out in the 1760s by Alexander Montgomery, 10th Earl of Eglinton, as a planned textile village, its broad main street (Polnoon Street) descending to the Eaglesham Burn creates an unusually spacious and attractive village streetscape; the village was designated a Conservation Area in 1969 and the entire village is listed. Eaglesham Moor, to the east, is one of several upland moor areas providing open landscape contrast to the suburban settlements. Education, Health and Quality of Life East Renfrewshire consistently produces some of the highest school attainment statistics in Scotland, with multiple secondary schools achieving outstanding examination results: St Ninian's High School (Giffnock), Mearns Castle High School (Newton Mearns), and Williamwood High School (Clarkston) regularly feature among Scotland's best-performing state schools. The council area has one of the highest concentrations of owner-occupied housing in Scotland and consistently high rankings in quality-of-life indices.
