Warwickshire is a county in the West Midlands of England. Covering approximately 1,975 square kilometres of agricultural landscape, river valleys, and market towns, Warwickshire had a population of approximately 590,000 at the 2021 Census (excluding the unitary authority of Coventry). The county is most famous worldwide as the birthplace of William Shakespeare and the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-upon-Avon, but also contains the finest surviving medieval castle in England at Warwick, the spectacular ruins of Kenilworth Castle, and the birthplace of George Eliot. Shakespeare and Stratford-upon-Avon Stratford-upon-Avon, on the River Avon in the south of the county, is one of the most visited towns in England outside London — its principal attraction being its intimate association with William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564, died 23 April 1616), widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the most performed dramatist in the world. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust manages five historic properties associated with Shakespeare and his family: Shakespeare's Birthplace on Henley Street (where he was born and grew up), Anne Hathaway's Cottage at Shottery (the farmhouse home of Shakespeare's wife before their marriage), New Place (the site of the grand house Shakespeare bought in 1597), Mary Arden's Farm at Wilmcote (the farm belonging to Shakespeare's mother's family), and Hall's Croft (the home of Shakespeare's daughter Susanna and her physician husband). The Church of the Holy Trinity, where Shakespeare was baptised in 1564 and buried in 1616, contains his grave in the chancel (reserved for him as a lay rector of the church). The Royal Shakespeare Company — based at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan Theatre in Stratford — is the most celebrated Shakespeare theatre company in the world, performing the complete works in repertory and attracting audiences from across the globe. Warwick Castle Warwick Castle — on a sandstone cliff above the River Avon in the centre of the county town — is the most completely preserved medieval castle in England and one of the most visited heritage attractions in the country. The present castle is largely the work of the Beauchamp Earls of Warwick in the 14th century, with the spectacular Caesar's Tower (40 metres) and Guy's Tower (39 metres) providing a dramatically crenellated skyline. The State Rooms contain collections of armour, furniture, and fine art. Kenilworth Castle — the extensive ruins of a great medieval and Elizabethan castle — was the venue for the celebrated 19-day Royal Entertainment of 1575, when Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, entertained Elizabeth I in a festival of pageantry and spectacle described in Sir Walter Scott's novel Kenilworth (1821). George Eliot and Rugby George Eliot (the pen name of Mary Anne Evans, 1819–1880), author of Middlemarch, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, and Daniel Deronda — widely regarded as the greatest Victorian novelist — was born at Arbury Farm, near Nuneaton. The landscape and society of the Warwickshire Midlands deeply informed her fiction. Rugby School, founded in 1567, is one of the most famous public schools in England; the school gave its name to the sport of rugby football, following the celebrated but historically uncertain incident in 1823 in which William Webb Ellis allegedly picked up the ball during a football game and ran with it.
