About Surrey

Surrey is a county in the South East of England, bordering Greater London to the north. Covering approximately 1,663 square kilometres of chalk hills, river valleys, commons, and heathland, Surrey had a population of approximately 1.2 million at the 2021 Census. One of the most affluent and populated counties in England relative to its size, Surrey contains Runnymede — where Magna Carta was sealed in 1215 — the principal horticultural showpiece of the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley, the Epsom Downs Racecourse (home of the Derby and the Oaks), the North Downs chalk escarpment, and some of the finest historic country houses and gardens in the South East. Runnymede and Magna Carta Runnymede, a water meadow on the southern bank of the Thames near Egham, is one of the most historically significant sites in the history of democratic government. It was at Runnymede, on 15 June 1215, that King John of England sealed Magna Carta — the Great Charter of Liberties — under compulsion from his barons, establishing for the first time the principle that the king was subject to the rule of law and that certain rights of free men could not be arbitrarily overridden by royal power. Magna Carta is widely regarded as one of the foundational documents of constitutional democracy worldwide and has directly influenced the United States Constitution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and constitutional documents across the world. A memorial to Magna Carta, erected by the American Bar Association in 1957, stands in a domed temple on the meadow at Runnymede; adjacent is the John F. Kennedy Memorial (1965) and the Magna Carta Memorial of the American Bar Association (both on land given to the American people in perpetuity by the National Trust). The North Downs and Box Hill The North Downs — the chalk escarpment crossing Surrey from west to east — provide the county's most dramatic landscape, with the steep scarp face looking north over the Vale of Holmesdale. Box Hill, managed by the National Trust, is the most famous viewpoint on the North Downs: a steep chalk hillside clothed with ancient box woodland and yew, climbing above the River Mole, and offering wide views northward over the Weald and the Surrey Hills. Box Hill appears in Jane Austen's Emma as the scene of the ill-fated picnic. The Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers approximately 422 square kilometres of the North Downs, Greensand Hills, and Weald. Wisley and Epsom RHS Garden Wisley — the principal garden of the Royal Horticultural Society — covers 97 hectares near Woking and is one of the most visited gardens in Britain and a leading centre of horticultural science, education, and display, drawing over a million visitors annually. The formal trials beds, the glasshouses, the wild garden, the alpine meadow, and the fruit trials make it a comprehensive display of horticultural excellence. Epsom Downs Racecourse has hosted The Derby (the premier Classic flat race in British horseracing, run annually over 1 mile and 4 furlongs for three-year-old thoroughbreds) and The Oaks (the premier fillies' Classic) since 1780 and 1779 respectively. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 1.2 million residents. Surrey is one of the least ethnically diverse counties in England: approximately 84% White, 9% Asian, and 4% other, reflecting its character as a largely commuter county for London's professional classes.
