About Essex

Essex is a county in the East of England. Covering approximately 3,674 square kilometres from the Thames Estuary in the south to the Suffolk border in the north, Essex had a population of approximately 1.5 million at the 2021 Census (excluding the unitary authorities of Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock, now merged into their respective regions). One of the most populous counties in England, Essex encompasses Britain's oldest recorded town at Colchester, the "Constable Country" of the Stour Valley, the oyster beds of Mersea Island, the ancient woodland of Epping Forest, and a long and varied estuarine coastline on the Thames and on the Blackwater, Crouch, and Colne rivers. Colchester: Britain's Oldest Town Colchester — the Roman Camulodunum — was the first capital of Roman Britain, established as a legionary fortress following the Claudian invasion of AD 43 and formally constituted as a colonia (the highest status of Roman town) in AD 49. Camulodunum was the largest and most important settlement in Roman Britain before the development of Londinium, and was sacked by Boudica (Boudicca), Queen of the Iceni, in AD 60 during the most serious native revolt against Roman rule; Tacitus records the massacre of the town's inhabitants. Colchester Castle, built in the late 11th century by the Normans on the foundations of the Temple of Claudius — one of the most significant Roman religious buildings in Britain — has the largest Norman keep in Europe (larger in plan than the Tower of London). The Balkerne Gate — a substantial section of the Roman town's west gate — is the finest surviving Roman gateway in Britain. Colchester's Roman walls also survive in considerable extent, and the Colchester Castle Museum holds the finest collection of Roman finds from a single town in England. Constable Country and the Stour Valley The Stour Valley, forming the border between Essex and Suffolk, is the landscape made famous by the paintings of John Constable (1776–1837), who was born at East Bergholt (Suffolk) and spent much of his career painting the mills, barges, willows, and meadows of the lower Stour. The area around Dedham Vale — including Flatford Mill (where Constable's The Hay Wain was painted), Dedham village, and East Bergholt — is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and draws visitors from across the world to walk in the footsteps of one of England's greatest landscape painters. Mersea Island and the Essex Coast Mersea Island, accessible by a tidal causeway from the mainland, has been famous for its oysters since Roman times; archaeological evidence confirms Roman oyster cultivation on the island. The Mersea Island Oyster Company continues to cultivate and sell Pacific and native oysters from the island's beds. The island also contains a remarkable Roman burial mound — the Mersea Mount — one of the finest Roman barrows in Britain. The Essex coastline is characterised by complex estuaries, salt marshes, and creeks that provide some of the most important habitats for wading birds, wildfowl, and rare invertebrates in the United Kingdom. Audley End and Historic Houses Audley End House, near Saffron Walden, is one of the grandest Jacobean mansions in England: built between 1603 and 1614 for Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, it was so large that King James I commented it was too large for a king but might do for a Lord Treasurer. Now managed by English Heritage, it was subsequently adapted by Vanbrugh and others and has significant 18th-century state rooms.
