About East Sussex

East Sussex is a county in the South East of England. Covering approximately 1,725 square kilometres of the eastern South Downs, the High Weald, and the Channel coast, East Sussex had a population of approximately 555,000 at the 2021 Census (excluding the unitary authority of Brighton and Hove). The county contains the site of the most significant military event in English history, a remarkably well-preserved medieval hill town, the most celebrated chalk cliff formation on the south coast, and the childhood landscape that inspired one of the best-loved works of children's literature. The Battle of Hastings and 1066 Country The Battle of Hastings — fought on 14 October 1066 on the ridge at Senlac Hill, seven miles inland from the town of Hastings — was the decisive engagement of the Norman Conquest of England, in which Duke William of Normandy defeated and killed King Harold II of England. The Normans' victory changed the English language, political system, culture, and social structure more profoundly than any other single event in English history. Battle Abbey was founded by William the Conqueror on the site of the battle, with the high altar of the abbey church marking the spot where Harold fell; the abbey gatehouse and substantial ruins survive, and the battlefield can be walked with interpretation boards. The town of Hastings itself, with its remarkable net-drying huts (tall narrow black-painted wooden buildings used to store fishing nets), remains an active fishing port. Lewes and the High Weald Lewes, the county town, is one of the most attractive historic towns in England, its Norman castle, medieval street plan (the High Street follows the ridge of the chalk Downs), Elizabethan and Georgian townscape, and famously passionate Guy Fawkes Night celebrations (the most spectacular in England, with numerous bonfire societies and processions through the town on 5 November) making it exceptionally distinctive. Rye, near the Kent border, is a remarkably complete medieval hill town of cobbled streets, timber-framed houses, and a distinctive silhouette; Henry James lived at Lamb House, Rye, from 1898 to 1916. Bodiam Castle (National Trust, 1385) — a concentric moated castle built by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge — is one of the most beautifully sited and best-preserved medieval castles in Britain. Beachy Head, the Seven Sisters and Eastbourne Beachy Head, the chalk headland at the eastern end of the South Downs, is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain at 162 metres; its white face and distinctive lighthouse at its base are among the most iconic views on the English coast. The Seven Sisters — the sequence of seven chalk cliff headlands between Cuckmere Haven and Beachy Head — are the most celebrated chalk cliff formation in England. Eastbourne, at the foot of the Downs, is a well-preserved Victorian and Edwardian seaside resort; the Towner Eastbourne art gallery is one of the finest regional galleries in England. Ashdown Forest and Winnie the Pooh Ashdown Forest, the remnant of a medieval royal hunting forest on the High Weald, provided A.A. Milne with the landscape for the Hundred Acre Wood in Winnie the Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928); Milne lived at Cotchford Farm near Hartfield, and Christopher Robin Milne's toys and the oak trees, streams, and heathland of the forest provided the inspiration.
