Westminster is a London borough in central London, England. Covering approximately 21 square kilometres along the north bank of the Thames between the City of London in the east and Kensington in the west, Westminster had a population of approximately 270,000 at the 2021 Census — a resident population that is greatly exceeded by the tens of millions of visitors who come each year to its extraordinary concentration of national institutions, royal palaces, historic buildings, museums, theatres, and parks. Westminster contains more Grade I listed buildings than any other local authority in England, and is in many respects the symbolic and governmental heart of the United Kingdom. The Palace of Westminster and Parliament The Palace of Westminster, the seat of the UK Parliament, stands on the north bank of the Thames in the heart of Westminster. The present building — a masterpiece of Victorian Gothic revival architecture designed by Charles Barry with the interiors and detailing by Augustus Pugin — was constructed between the 1840s and 1870s to replace the medieval palace largely destroyed by fire in 1834. The building contains the House of Commons, the House of Lords, Westminster Hall (the only significant surviving element of the medieval palace, with its magnificent hammerbeam roof of 1393-1401), and Elizabeth Tower — the clock tower universally known as "Big Ben" (the name of the main bell) — whose chime is one of the most recognisable sounds in the world. Westminster Abbey Westminster Abbey, the Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, is a royal peculiar (directly under the sovereign rather than any bishop) and the site of the coronation of every English and British monarch since William the Conqueror in 1066. The present Gothic building was substantially rebuilt by Henry III from 1245 and completed over the following two centuries. The Abbey contains the tombs and memorials of kings, queens, statesmen, poets (Poets' Corner — Chaucer, Dickens, Hardy, Kipling, Tennyson), composers (Handel, Purcell), scientists (Darwin, Newton — in fact Newton's grave is at the abbey), and many others. It is one of the most visited religious buildings in Britain. Buckingham Palace, Downing Street and the West End Buckingham Palace, at the end of The Mall, has been the official London residence of the sovereign since Queen Victoria moved in in 1837. The palace's 775 rooms include 19 state rooms and 52 royal and guest bedrooms; the State Rooms are open to visitors each summer. The Changing of the Guard, performed outside the palace, is one of London's most visited ceremonial spectacles. 10 Downing Street, a terrace house of deceptively modest exterior, has been the official residence of the Prime Minister since 1735; the Cabinet Room where government decisions are taken is inside. The West End — including Soho (theatres, restaurants, nightlife), Mayfair (luxury hotels, galleries, Grosvenor Square), Regent Street, Oxford Street, and Covent Garden — is the entertainment, shopping, and cultural heart of the capital. Westminster is extremely diverse: approximately 55% White, 15% Asian, 6% Black, and 14% other, reflecting the borough's cosmopolitan nature as a major global destination.
