Southwark is a London borough in south and central London, England. Covering approximately 29 square kilometres on the south bank of the Thames, stretching from London Bridge in the north to Dulwich and Crystal Palace in the south, Southwark had a population of approximately 320,000 at the 2021 Census. One of the most historically rich and culturally active boroughs in London, Southwark encompasses Borough Market — one of the oldest food markets in England — Tate Modern, the Shakespeare's Globe theatre, the UK's tallest building, Southwark Cathedral, and the former leather trade of Bermondsey, alongside some of the most dynamic contemporary art and music venues in the capital. Borough Market and Medieval History Borough Market, on the southern approach to London Bridge, is one of the oldest food markets in England, with a trading history stretching back at least to 1276. For much of its history the market served as the principal wholesale food market for the south bank, supplied by produce arriving on the river and by road from the farms of Kent and Surrey. Today Borough Market operates as London's foremost specialty food market, with traders from across Britain and Europe selling artisan cheese, charcuterie, bread, fresh produce, fish, meat, and specialist ingredients; it is one of the most visited food destinations in London. The medieval Southwark — known as "the Borough" — was famous throughout the Middle Ages as the location of the inns and taverns where pilgrims to Canterbury assembled (the Tabard Inn, from which Chaucer's Canterbury pilgrims set out, stood on Borough High Street) and as an entertainment district outside the jurisdiction of the City of London, home to bear-baiting pits and the theatres of Elizabethan London. Shakespeare's Globe and Elizabethan Theatre Shakespeare's Globe, on the south bank of the Thames, is a reconstruction of the Globe Theatre — the principal playhouse of William Shakespeare's company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men — that was built in 1599 near Bankside and destroyed by fire in 1613. The modern reconstruction, completed in 1997 and built to an approximation of the original design using traditional materials and construction methods, operates as a working theatre and educational centre. The adjacent Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, a candlelit indoor Jacobean theatre, opened in 2014. The remains of the original Rose Theatre (1587) are preserved in an interpretive centre nearby. Southwark Cathedral, adjacent to Borough Market, is the oldest Gothic building in London still standing, with 12th-century nave arcading; it contains monuments to Shakespeare, John Gower, and Edmund Shakespeare (William's brother). Tate Modern and The Shard Tate Modern, housed in the former Bankside Power Station designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (completed 1963), opened in 2000 as the national gallery of modern and contemporary art. The iconic building — its vast Turbine Hall serving as one of the world's most dramatic public art spaces — receives approximately 6 million visitors annually, making it one of the most visited art museums in the world. The Shard, at 309.6 metres the tallest building in the United Kingdom, was designed by architect Renzo Piano and completed in 2012. Its distinctive glass spire, tapering to an open apex, dominates the London Bridge skyline and contains offices, restaurants, a hotel, and a public viewing gallery. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 320,000 residents. Southwark is diverse: approximately 54% White, 16% Black, 11% Asian, and 12% mixed or other.
