Richmond upon Thames is a London borough in southwest London, England. Straddling the River Thames on both its north and south banks and covering approximately 57 square kilometres, Richmond upon Thames had a population of approximately 200,000 at the 2021 Census. The only London borough to span both sides of the Thames, Richmond upon Thames is one of the most desirable and celebrated of all London's boroughs — home to the world's finest botanical gardens, the largest of the Royal Parks, some of the most significant Tudor royal architecture in England, and the headquarters of English rugby union. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew — universally known as Kew Gardens — is the world's leading botanical and mycological science institute, holding the largest and most diverse collection of living plants on earth. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, Kew's 121-hectare garden contains over 50,000 living plant species, more than 8.5 million preserved specimens in its Herbarium, 750,000 specimens in its Fungarium, and one of the world's most comprehensive collections of botanical art, books, and manuscripts. The Palm House — designed by Decimus Burton and Richard Turner and constructed 1844–1848 — is the finest surviving Victorian iron-and-glass building in the world, housing plants of the tropical rainforest. The Great Pagoda (William Chambers, 1762), a ten-storey octagonal tower of Chinese inspiration, was one of the most celebrated garden buildings of the 18th century and has been recently restored to its original gilded and polychrome glory. Richmond Park and Hampton Court Palace Richmond Park, covering approximately 1,000 hectares and the largest Royal Park in London, was enclosed by Charles I in 1637 as a private deer park and has been accessible to the public since the 18th century. Home to around 650 red and fallow deer, the park is a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the famous view of St Paul's Cathedral from King Henry's Mound — protected by a legislative sightline — demonstrates the extraordinary integration of the park into the visual landscape of London. Hampton Court Palace, on the north bank of the Thames at East Molesey, is the finest surviving Tudor royal palace in England. Built by Cardinal Wolsey from 1514 and seized by Henry VIII in 1529, the palace was extended, rebuilt, and elaborated over more than a century; William and Mary commissioned Sir Christopher Wren to add the baroque King's and Queen's apartments (1689–1700), making Hampton Court a monument to two distinct architectural ages. The famous Hampton Court maze — planted in 1702 — is the oldest hedge maze in England. Twickenham Stadium and Rugby Twickenham Stadium, in the town of Twickenham on the north bank of the Thames, is the home of England Rugby and the largest dedicated rugby union stadium in the world, with a capacity of approximately 82,000. Known affectionately as "Twickers," the stadium has hosted England international matches since 1910. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 200,000 residents.
