About Redbridge

Redbridge is a London borough in northeast London, England. Covering approximately 56 square kilometres on the border with Essex, Redbridge had a population of approximately 310,000 at the 2021 Census. The borough takes its name from a former red-brick bridge across the River Roding and encompasses the former county town of Ilford, the suburban districts of Woodford, Wanstead, Barkingside, and Gants Hill, and the southern fringe of Epping Forest. Redbridge contains several significant heritage sites, a notable Victorian philanthropic legacy, and a diverse community with large South Asian, Jewish, and Eastern European communities. Dr Barnardo's Village Homes Barkingside, in the heart of Redbridge, was the site of Dr Thomas John Barnardo's Village Homes for Girls — established from 1876 onwards on a large estate, and at its peak housing approximately 1,500 girls in over 60 cottage homes set around a central green and chapel. Dr Barnardo (1845–1905), an Irish-born physician and evangelical Christian who devoted his life to the welfare of destitute and orphaned children, founded what became one of the largest child welfare charities in Britain. The Village Homes pioneered the concept of "cottage homes" — small family-scale units rather than large institutional buildings — which profoundly influenced the design of children's care in Britain. A significant portion of the original Barnardo's cottages survives at the Girls' Village Home site in Barkingside, now managed as a heritage site. Wanstead and Epping Forest Wanstead, in the southwest of the borough, is one of the most attractive suburban villages in outer northeast London, with a distinctive character shaped by its proximity to the southern arm of Epping Forest. Wanstead Flats — an extensive area of open grassland and scrub on the southwestern edge of Epping Forest — is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of the most important open spaces in outer east London. The former Wanstead House (demolished 1824) was one of the grandest Baroque palaces ever built in Britain; its park and lake survive. The Church of St Mary the Virgin (1790) in Wanstead is an elegant neoclassical church of high quality. Cultural and Community Heritage Valentines Mansion, in Valentines Park, Ilford, is a late 17th-century country house set in a public park of approximately 40 acres. The house has been significantly restored and is now operated as a museum with period room displays. Redbridge has a large and long-established Jewish community (particularly in the Newbury Park and Redbridge areas) alongside a rapidly growing South Asian community concentrated in Ilford and Seven Kings, making the borough one of the most rapidly diversifying in outer London. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 310,000 residents. Redbridge is highly diverse: approximately 44% White, 35% Asian (predominantly South Asian — large Indian, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani communities), 9% Black, and 7% mixed or other.
