About Newham

Newham is a London borough in east London, England. Covering approximately 36 square kilometres on the north bank of the Thames between the Lee Valley and the Royal Docks, Newham had a population of approximately 355,000 at the 2021 Census. One of the most transformed boroughs in London over the past two decades, Newham was the host borough of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games — a decision that catalysed an enormous programme of urban regeneration centred on Stratford — and today contains the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, one of the largest new urban parks in Europe, alongside major transport hubs, a significant exhibition centre, and one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the United Kingdom. The 2012 Olympics and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were centred on Stratford, in the heart of Newham, where one of the largest post-industrial brownfield regeneration projects in European history converted a former industrial and railway wasteland into the Olympic Park. The principal venues — the Olympic Stadium (now London Stadium), the Velodrome, the Aquatics Centre, the handball arena, and the athletes' village — were constructed on a former gasworks and marshland site, cleaned of decades of industrial contamination. The Velodrome, designed by Hopkins Architects with a distinctive cable-net roof, is widely regarded as the finest building constructed for the 2012 Games. The Olympic Stadium, expanded to 80,000 capacity for the Games and subsequently converted to a football and athletics venue as London Stadium (home of West Ham United FC since 2016), holds 60,000 for football. The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which opened to the public after the Games in 2013, covers 227 hectares and includes the ArcelorMittal Orbit — Anish Kapoor's 114.5-metre tall steel sculpture and observation tower, with a twisting slide designed by Carsten Höller descending its exterior — as well as extensive landscaped gardens, waterways, and children's play areas. Stratford and Transport Stratford station, at the heart of the Olympic development, has become one of the most intensively used transport interchanges in London, served by six rail and Underground lines (the Elizabeth line, Jubilee line, Central line, DLR, London Overground, and c2c) as well as Stratford International (with High Speed 1 services to the Channel Tunnel). The area's excellent connectivity has driven significant commercial and residential development, including the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre (one of the largest urban shopping centres in Europe) and major hotel, office, and residential developments. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 355,000 residents. Newham is one of the most ethnically diverse local authorities in England: only approximately 17% White British — one of the lowest proportions in the country — with significant South Asian (predominantly Bangladeshi and Indian), Black African, Black Caribbean, and many other communities. The borough has one of the youngest average populations in England.
