Lewisham is a London borough in southeast London, England. Covering approximately 35 square kilometres between Greenwich to the east and Bromley to the south, Lewisham had a population of approximately 310,000 at the 2021 Census. The borough combines the cosmopolitan energy of Lewisham and Catford town centres with the elegant Georgian and Regency landscape of Blackheath, one of the finest open heath settings in London, and a remarkable historical concentration of connections to Elizabethan theatre, medieval revolt, and the origins of Britain's first permanent European settlement in the Americas. Blackheath Blackheath, on the high plateau at the northern edge of the borough bordering Greenwich, is one of the most historically significant open spaces in the London area. The Great North Road historically crossed Blackheath on its way from London to Dover, and the heath served as a mustering ground for armies and rebels for centuries: Wat Tyler assembled the forces of the Peasants' Revolt here in 1381, before marching on London and presenting demands to the young Richard II at Smithfield; Henry V was greeted at Blackheath on his triumphant return from Agincourt in 1415; and Jack Cade's rebel army camped here before the 1450 march on London. The village and residential streets around Blackheath are among the finest Georgian and Regency domestic architecture in London, with elegant terraces and individual villas of exceptional quality. Deptford and Elizabethan Drama Deptford, on the Thames in the north of the borough, was home to the Royal Navy's first dockyard, established by Henry VIII around 1513. The Deptford Dockyard built some of the most celebrated vessels in British naval history, including the Golden Hind (in which Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the globe, 1577–1580), the Ark Royal, and vessels of the Armada period. The dockyard closed in 1869. Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593), playwright and predecessor of Shakespeare — whose Doctor Faustus, Tamburlaine the Great, and Edward II established the Elizabethan dramatic tradition — was killed in a brawl in a house in Deptford on 30 May 1593 in circumstances that have never been entirely explained and have fuelled centuries of conspiracy theory about the identity of "Shakespeare." The Horniman Museum The Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, founded by tea merchant Frederick Horniman and opened in 1901 in a building designed by Charles Harrison Townsend (one of the most original buildings of the Arts and Crafts period), holds a remarkable and eclectic collection spanning anthropology, natural history, and musical instruments. The museum's famous oversize walrus (stuffed before taxidermists understood how much skin to remove, giving it an improbably bloated appearance) has become an iconic and beloved object. The gardens, managed as a nature reserve and including a working farm, overlook the city from the Forest Hill ridge. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 310,000 residents. Lewisham is one of London's most diverse boroughs: approximately 52% White, 21% Black (including large Black African and Black Caribbean communities), 7% Asian, and 12% mixed or other.
