Lambeth is a London borough in south London, England. Covering approximately 27 square kilometres on the south bank of the Thames between Vauxhall and Norwood, Lambeth had a population of approximately 330,000 at the 2021 Census. One of the most culturally significant and historically layered of London's south bank boroughs, Lambeth encompasses the official residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the birthplace of David Bowie, one of the most important cricket grounds in England, and the cultural heartland of the Windrush generation whose arrival transformed postwar British society. Lambeth Palace Lambeth Palace, on the south bank of the Thames directly opposite the Houses of Parliament, has been the official London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury — the senior bishop of the Church of England and spiritual head of the Anglican Communion worldwide — since around 1200. The palace complex is one of the most historically significant ecclesiastical buildings in England, with buildings spanning eight centuries: Morton's Tower (the magnificent red-brick gatehouse of the 1490s, built by Cardinal Morton), the medieval Great Hall, the Tudor and Jacobean ranges, the 17th-century chapel, and later additions. The Oval Cricket Ground The Oval cricket ground, formally the Kia Oval, at Kennington is the home ground of Surrey County Cricket Club and one of the most historic cricket venues in England. The first ever Test match to be played in England was held at The Oval in September 1880, between England and Australia; the Ashes series effectively originated with the 1882 match at The Oval, when Australia's victory prompted a mock obituary in The Sporting Times announcing that English cricket had died and "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia." The Oval has staged more Test matches than any other ground in England and is a beloved and distinctive London landmark, its gasholders (now listed buildings) providing one of the most recognisable backdrops in English sport. Lambeth is highly diverse: approximately 51% White, 21% Black (one of the highest proportions in London), 7% Asian, and 13% mixed or other, reflecting the borough's long history of Caribbean and African settlement.
