Kensington and Chelsea is a Royal Borough in west-central London, England. Covering approximately 12 square kilometres — the smallest London borough by area — Kensington and Chelsea had a population of approximately 155,000 at the 2021 Census. It is consistently the most expensive borough in the United Kingdom, with average house prices among the highest in the world, and contains some of London's most visited tourist attractions, a remarkable concentration of nationally significant museums and cultural institutions, and some of the most distinctive urban neighbourhoods in England. South Kensington: The Museum Quarter South Kensington, in the heart of the borough, houses the most concentrated cluster of major national museums in the world — sometimes called "Albertopolis" after Prince Albert, whose vision of the area as a national cultural centre following the Great Exhibition of 1851 shaped its development. The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), founded in 1852, is the world's largest museum of decorative arts and design, with a collection of over 2.3 million objects spanning 5,000 years of art across all cultures. The Natural History Museum (opened 1881, designed by Alfred Waterhouse in a magnificent Romanesque terracotta building) contains approximately 80 million specimens from across the natural world, including the giant blue whale skeleton displayed in the Hintze Hall and the famous Diplodocus cast "Dippy." The Science Museum, tracing the history of science, technology, engineering, and medicine, contains Stephenson's Rocket, Puffing Billy, and Apollo 10. The Royal Albert Hall, a vast domed concert arena opened in 1871 by Queen Victoria, is one of the most famous performance venues in the world and the home of the BBC Proms each summer. Notting Hill and the Carnival Notting Hill, in the northwest of the borough, was transformed from a Victorian slum in the late 19th century — notorious for the "Pottery Lane" pig farms and brickfields — to a fashionable residential neighbourhood from the 1970s onwards. The Notting Hill Carnival, held annually over the August Bank Holiday weekend, is Europe's largest street festival, attracting up to one million visitors over two days with Caribbean music, food, and elaborate costumed processions. The carnival began in 1966 as an event for the Caribbean community — particularly Trinidadians — who settled in Notting Hill from the 1950s. Portobello Road Market, running through the heart of Notting Hill, is one of the most famous antique and street markets in the world. Kensington Palace and Gardens Kensington Palace, on the western edge of Kensington Gardens, has been a royal residence since 1689, when King William III and Mary II purchased a modest country house and had it enlarged by Sir Christopher Wren. The palace was the birthplace of Queen Victoria (1819) and was the London home of Princess Diana from 1981 until her death in 1997. Parts of the palace are open to the public, managed by Historic Royal Palaces, and the adjacent Kensington Gardens — the western half of the combined Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens area — contain the Albert Memorial, the Serpentine Gallery, and the Diana Memorial Fountain. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 155,000 residents. Kensington and Chelsea is relatively diverse: approximately 66% White, 9% Asian, 6% Black, and 8% mixed or other, with significant Arab, Russian, and French communities in the more affluent areas, and a long-established Portuguese community in North Kensington.
