Islington is a London borough in north-central London, England. Covering approximately 15 square kilometres of inner north London immediately north of the City of London and east of Camden, Islington had a population of approximately 245,000 at the 2021 Census. One of the most densely populated local authorities in England outside central London, Islington has transformed from a largely working-class and artisan borough in the mid-20th century to one of the most fashionable and culturally rich inner London boroughs, combining a notable arts and entertainment heritage, George Orwell's most productive years, and the UK's most celebrated tech cluster. The Angel and Upper Street The Angel, Islington — named for a historic coaching inn on the Great North Road — is the site of one of the most concentrated restaurant, bar, and cultural scenes in London. Upper Street, running from the Angel north towards Highbury, has one of the highest densities of restaurants and bars of any street in London, with dozens of independent and chain restaurants catering to the borough's young professional and artistic population. The Camden Passage antiques market (in a Georgian alley just off the Angel) and the business of the Chapel Street market add further commercial character to the area. George Orwell George Orwell (1903–1950), one of the most important political writers of the 20th century, lived in Islington for a significant period of his creative life. Orwell occupied a flat at 27B Canonbury Square, Islington, from 1945 until the publication of Animal Farm made him financially able to move to Jura, where he wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four. Orwell was closely associated with the radical political culture of Islington — the borough's population of journalists, writers, and left-wing intellectuals was precisely the milieu in which Orwell moved, argued, and wrote. A blue plaque marks his Canonbury Square home. Sadler's Wells Theatre Sadler's Wells Theatre, at the southern end of Rosebery Avenue in Clerkenwell, is the home of dance in Britain — the most important venue for ballet, contemporary dance, and physical theatre in the country. The site has a theatrical history stretching back to 1683, when Thomas Sadler discovered a medicinal well in his garden and began staging music hall entertainments; it became a major centre for opera and drama in the 18th century and staged the premieres of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. The current theatre, rebuilt and reopened in 1998 to designs by Nicholas Hare Architects, is a 1,500-seat venue that hosts over 500 performances annually, including major ballet companies (the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Scottish Ballet, and visiting international companies) and leading contemporary dance choreographers. Silicon Roundabout The Old Street area, straddling the Islington/Hackney border at Old Street roundabout, has given its name to "Silicon Roundabout" — the informal collective term for the concentration of technology companies, digital startups, venture capital funds, and creative businesses that colonised the railway arches, Victorian warehouses, and converted industrial buildings of East London from the late 1990s onwards. The cluster has grown into one of the largest technology hubs in the world outside the United States, with over 3,000 technology companies and representing a significant proportion of UK tech GDP. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 245,000 residents. Islington is highly diverse: approximately 64% White (including large Irish, European, and mixed white communities), 9% Black, 7% Asian, and 12% mixed or other.
