Hillingdon is a London borough in west London, England. Covering approximately 115 square kilometres — the second-largest London borough by area — Hillingdon had a population of approximately 310,000 at the 2021 Census. The borough is dominated above all by Heathrow Airport, one of the world's busiest international airports and the primary hub of UK aviation, which occupies a large area in the south and generates more economic activity in a single site than almost any other place in the London region. Beyond Heathrow, Hillingdon encompasses the historic market town of Uxbridge, significant Battle of Britain heritage, the Grand Union Canal, and extensive rural and suburban landscapes. RAF Uxbridge and the Battle of Britain The underground Battle of Britain Operations Room at RAF Uxbridge — preserved exactly as it was on 15 September 1940 (now commemorated as Battle of Britain Day) — is one of the most historically significant military heritage sites in Britain. No. 11 Group Operations Room, deep beneath the historic RAF station at Uxbridge, was the command centre from which Air Vice Marshal Keith Park directed the fighter squadrons defending London and the southeast against the Luftwaffe's daily raids during the critical summer and autumn of 1940. It was here that Winston Churchill visited on 15 September 1940 and, watching the tote board showing all squadrons "engaged" with no reserves, reportedly said "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few" — words that became one of the most celebrated phrases of the Second World War. The Grand Union Canal The Grand Union Canal, the longest canal in Britain, runs through the eastern part of Hillingdon for several miles, connecting London with Birmingham via the Midlands. The section through Uxbridge and Cowley contains historic lock-keepers' cottages, canal wharves, and towpaths that offer some of the most attractive walking and cycling in the London area. The canal was a major artery for the transport of coal, grain, timber, and manufactured goods in the 18th and 19th centuries before the railways superseded it. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 310,000 residents. Hillingdon is moderately diverse: approximately 56% White, 26% Asian (with large South Asian communities, particularly in Southall on the Ealing border and in Hayes), 6% Black, and 6% mixed or other.
