About Enfield

Enfield is a London borough in north London, England. Covering approximately 81 square kilometres stretching from the North Circular Road in the south to the Hertfordshire border in the north and the Lee Valley in the east, Enfield had a population of approximately 340,000 at the 2021 Census. The borough has a remarkable industrial and technological heritage — the world's first automatic teller machine (ATM) was installed in Enfield, the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock supplied the British Army's rifles for over two centuries, and the Lee Valley wetlands on the eastern boundary form part of one of the most significant nature corridors in the London area. The Royal Small Arms Factory The Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock, established in 1816 on an island in the River Lee where it powered the factory's machinery, was one of the most important defence manufacturing sites in British history. For nearly 175 years, the factory manufactured the principal infantry rifle of the British Army: from the Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle (the standard weapon of the British Army during the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the American Civil War, where it was widely used by both sides), through the Lee-Enfield series (the standard British infantry weapon from 1895 through two World Wars — the SMLE, "Short Magazine Lee-Enfield," is considered one of the finest bolt-action rifles ever produced), to the L85A1/SA80 (the British Army's current standard assault rifle, introduced in 1985). The factory closed in 1988. The manufacturing buildings on Lock Island have been converted to housing while the heritage buildings are being conserved. The World's First ATM The world's first automatic teller machine (cash machine) was installed at a Barclays Bank branch at 15 High Street, Enfield, on 27 June 1967. The machine, designed by John Shepherd-Barron and built by De La Rue, dispensed cash in exchange for specially coded and mildly radioactive cheques, and required users to enter a four-digit PIN (Shepherd-Barron had originally proposed six digits but his wife could only remember four). The event transformed daily financial life and the ATM network now numbers over three million machines worldwide, processing billions of transactions annually. Forty Hall and the Lee Valley Forty Hall, in Forty Hill in the north of the borough, is a well-preserved Jacobean mansion of approximately 1629–1636, built for Sir Nicholas Rainton (a Lord Mayor of London) in a style transitional between the Jacobean and later Classical traditions. Now managed by Enfield Council, the house contains period furnishings and a museum of Enfield's history. The Lee Valley Regional Park, stretching along the eastern boundary of Enfield for several miles, combines large reservoirs, wetland nature reserves, sports facilities, and industrial heritage along the River Lee Navigation — a waterway that has served the London area since the medieval period. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 340,000 residents. Enfield is one of London's more diverse outer boroughs: approximately 56% White, 19% Black, 12% Asian, and 6% mixed, with large Turkish and Turkish-Cypriot communities concentrated in Edmonton, and significant Greek-Cypriot and Eastern European communities.
