About Ealing

Ealing is a London borough in west London, England. Covering approximately 55 square kilometres stretching from the North Circular Road in the east to the M25/Heathrow boundary in the west, Ealing had a population of approximately 360,000 at the 2021 Census. Known as the "Queen of the Suburbs" since the late 19th century for the quality and character of its residential streets, Ealing is internationally celebrated for Ealing Studios — one of the oldest continuously operating film studios in the world — and for Southall's vibrant Punjabi community, while the borough also contains one of the most important early railway engineering monuments in Britain. Ealing Studios Ealing Studios, on Ealing Green in the heart of the borough, was established in 1902 and is the oldest continuously operating studio facility in the world. The studios are most celebrated for the "Ealing Comedies" produced between 1947 and 1957 under the production regime of Michael Balcon — a series of sardonic, witty British comedies that defined a national cinematic style and remain among the most loved films in British cinema history. Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), starring Alec Guinness as eight members of the same aristocratic family, is often cited as one of the greatest films ever made; The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) and The Man in the White Suit (1951) launched Alec Guinness to international stardom; Passport to Pimlico (1949) captured the postwar longing for freedom from rationing; and The Ladykillers (1955), with Guinness and Peter Sellers, is widely regarded as the finest of the series. Ealing Studios continues to operate as a working production facility, and television series and feature films are regularly produced on the lot. Pitzhanger Manor and Walpole Park Pitzhanger Manor, in Walpole Park in central Ealing, is a Regency villa of exceptional architectural distinction, designed and rebuilt between 1800 and 1804 by Sir John Soane — the architect of the Bank of England and one of the great creative individualists of English architecture — as his personal country residence. Soane incorporated a surviving wing of an earlier house (by George Dance the Younger) and built a remarkable suite of new rooms, with his characteristic play of light, mirrors, incised decoration, and spatial complexity. The house passed through various hands and was used for many years as Ealing Public Library before being restored and reopened as a gallery and museum in 2019 — now displaying Soane's original designs and furniture alongside a programme of temporary exhibitions. Southall and the Punjabi Community Southall, in the southwestern part of Ealing, is one of the principal centres of the South Asian diaspora in Britain and one of the most vibrant Punjabi communities outside the Indian subcontinent. The Punjabi community began settling in Southall in significant numbers from the 1950s, initially to work in local factories, and grew rapidly through chain migration. Today Southall's main street (the Broadway) is lined with Indian restaurants, sari shops, jewellers, grocery stores, Bollywood music and video retailers, and the numerous gurdwaras (Sikh temples) that serve the community — the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara on Havelock Road is the largest Sikh temple in Europe outside India. Ealing is one of the most diverse boroughs in London: approximately 47% White, 24% Asian (predominantly South Asian), 10% Black, and 11% mixed or other.
