Brent is a London borough in northwest London, England. Covering approximately 43 square kilometres stretching from the North Circular Road in the south to the borders of Hertfordshire in the north, Brent had a population of approximately 340,000 at the 2021 Census. The borough is one of the most celebrated — and most contested — in English cultural life: home to Wembley Stadium, the spiritual home of English football; the Neasden Temple, the largest Hindu temple outside India; and one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the United Kingdom, a mosaic of South Asian, Black Caribbean, Black African, Irish, and many other communities that has given Brent a distinctive multicultural character unlike any other London borough. Wembley Stadium Wembley Stadium — formally the FA's national football stadium — is one of the most famous sports venues in the world and the home of the England national football team. The original Wembley Stadium, completed in 1923 and famous for its twin towers, was built for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 and staged its first FA Cup Final on 28 April 1923 (the "White Horse Final"). Over the next eight decades, Wembley hosted the 1948 London Olympics (athletics), the 1966 FIFA World Cup Final (England's only major international football trophy), the 1985 Live Aid concert, and hundreds of FA Cup Finals and England matches. The original stadium was demolished in 2003 and replaced by the new Wembley Stadium, which opened in 2011 and holds 90,000 spectators. The new stadium, designed by HOK Sport with the distinctive 133-metre arch that has become a symbol of northwest London, is the second-largest stadium in Europe. BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir (Neasden Temple) The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir at Neasden is the largest Hindu temple outside India and one of the most spectacular buildings of the late 20th century in Britain. Completed and consecrated in August 1995, the Mandir was built entirely without steel — in accordance with traditional Hindu Shilpa Shastra architecture — from Turkish limestone and Bulgarian limestone carved in India by over 1,500 craftsmen who hand-carved 26,300 pieces of stone, which were then shipped to London and assembled. The main Mandir (temple sanctuary) rises through intricately carved spires and domes, and the adjacent Haveli (cultural hall) is equally richly ornamented. The complex, which attracts over 600,000 visitors annually, houses the main Swaminarayan shrine and a permanent exhibition on Hindu culture and philosophy. Diversity Brent is consistently ranked as one of the most ethnically diverse local authorities in England and Wales. Only approximately 26% of residents identified as White British at the 2021 Census — one of the lowest proportions in the country. The South Asian community (predominantly Gujarati Hindus and Punjabi Sikhs) is the borough's largest minority group, concentrated in Wembley, Harlesden, and Kingsbury. Wembley town centre is particularly known as the heart of the Gujarati community, with a concentration of Indian restaurants, sweet shops, sari boutiques, and South Asian grocery stores. Residents speak over 100 languages, and the borough hosts communities from virtually every nation in the world.
