Barnet is a London borough in north London, England. Covering approximately 87 square kilometres — one of the largest boroughs in Greater London by area — Barnet had a population of approximately 400,000 at the 2021 Census. The borough stretches from the edge of the North Circular Road in the south to the Hertfordshire border in the north, encompassing the districts of Finchley, Hendon, Golders Green, Barnet town, Edgware, and East Barnet. Barnet combines the associations of one of the most significant medieval battles in English history with a thriving Jewish community, the national museum of aviation, and some of the most desirable residential districts in outer north London. The Battle of Barnet The Battle of Barnet, fought on 14 April 1471 in thick morning fog on the plateau of Hadley Green (now Monken Hadley Common, at the northern edge of the borough), was one of the most decisive engagements of the Wars of the Roses. King Edward IV, having returned from exile in Burgundy, confronted the forces of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick — the most powerful nobleman in England, known as "the Kingmaker" — in the mist. Confusion caused by the fog led to Lancastrian forces firing on their own allies, and in the ensuing chaos Warwick was killed as he fled toward his horse. His death effectively ended Lancastrian resistance in the north, and Edward IV secured his throne. A memorial obelisk (1740) on Hadley Common marks the approximate site of the battle. The Jewish Community Barnet contains one of the largest and most established Jewish communities in the United Kingdom, concentrated particularly in the districts of Golders Green, Hendon, Edgware, and Finchley. Jewish families began settling in Golders Green from the early 20th century as the Northern Line made north London accessible, and the community grew substantially with the arrival of refugees from Nazi Germany in the 1930s and post-war immigration. Highlights include a Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster bomber, Vulcan bomber, and Messerschmitt Bf 109. Margaret Thatcher Finchley was the parliamentary constituency of Margaret Thatcher (later Baroness Thatcher), who served as MP for Finchley from 1959 to 1992 and as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 — the UK's first and only female Prime Minister. Thatcher's political base and constituency surgeries were in Finchley throughout her career, making Barnet closely associated with one of the most transformative and controversial political leaders of the 20th century.
