Gateshead is a metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear, England. Covering approximately 142 square kilometres on the south bank of the River Tyne directly opposite Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead had a population of approximately 200,000 at the 2021 Census. Long overshadowed by its neighbour Newcastle, Gateshead has undergone one of the most dramatic cultural transformations of any English town in the past three decades — the south bank of the Tyne is now home to the Angel of the North, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, the Sage Gateshead concert hall, and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, together forming one of the most celebrated concentrations of contemporary arts and architecture in England. The Angel of the North The Angel of the North, standing on a hill above the A1 road at the southern approach to Gateshead, is one of the most iconic works of public art in Britain and arguably the most visited piece of public art in the world. Designed by sculptor Antony Gormley and completed in 1998, the Angel is a steel figure 20 metres (66 feet) tall, with outstretched wings spanning 54 metres (177 feet) — wider than a Boeing 757. The figure stands on a concrete plinth above a former coalfield colliery site, its wings angled slightly forward, giving the impression that the Angel is stepping into the landscape. Made of weathering steel ("Corten"), the Angel was designed to rust gradually to a warm reddish-brown colour, blending with the surrounding moorland. More than 33 million people pass the Angel each year, and it has become a defining symbol of the North East of England. Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (BALTIC), located in a converted 1950s flour mill on the south bank of the Tyne, is one of the largest contemporary art galleries outside London, with approximately 3,000 square metres of gallery space across five floors. Since opening in 2002, BALTIC has become one of the most visited contemporary art venues in the UK, presenting major solo and group exhibitions by leading international artists alongside commissions, residencies, and an ambitious education programme. The building's industrial form — the bulk of the former Spillers flour mill — has been retained and incorporated into the new design, with the riverside facade now housing a rooftop restaurant with views across the Tyne to Newcastle. Sage Gateshead The Sage Gateshead music centre, designed by Norman Foster and Partners and opened in 2004, is a striking building of curved steel and glass arching over the Gateshead Quayside. The building contains three performance venues — a concert hall with 1,700 seats, a smaller flexible music space, and a rehearsal and education facility — and is the home of the Royal Northern Sinfonia. The Sage has established itself as one of the leading music venues in the north of England for classical music, jazz, folk, and popular music. Gateshead Millennium Bridge The Gateshead Millennium Bridge (2001), linking Gateshead Quays with Newcastle's Quayside, is the world's first tilting bridge. The bridge carries pedestrians and cyclists across the Tyne and, when large vessels need to pass, pivots on its piers to open a 25-metre clearance above the water — the movement resembling the opening of an eyelid, earning the bridge the nickname "the blinking eye." The bridge won the Royal Institute of British Architects' Stirling Prize in 2002. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 200,000 residents. Gateshead is predominantly White British (approximately 88%), with smaller South Asian and mixed-heritage communities. The borough contains some of the most deprived communities in the north of England, particularly in the former heavy industrial areas, alongside rapidly regenerating urban districts.
