Leeds is a metropolitan borough and city in West Yorkshire, England. Covering approximately 552 square kilometres of the lower Aire Valley and the surrounding uplands, Leeds had a population of approximately 812,000 at the 2021 Census — making it the third most populous metropolitan district in England after London and Birmingham. One of England's great Victorian industrial cities, Leeds was the commercial capital of the wool trade and a centre of engineering and printing. Today it is England's largest financial and legal centre outside London, a major university city, and a cultural centre with internationally significant museums, art galleries, and music venues. History and the Cloth Trade Leeds's rise to commercial prominence was built on the wool and cloth trade. The town's cloth market, held in the open street from medieval times, moved into formal Cloth Halls — the White Cloth Hall (1711) and the Mixed Cloth Hall (1756, later known as the Corn Exchange) — as the industry expanded in the 18th century. Richard Arkwright's water frame and later the power loom mechanised the industry during the Industrial Revolution, and Leeds became a major centre for ready-made clothing as well as cloth production — the "tailoring" industry in Leeds employed tens of thousands in the late Victorian era. Marks & Spencer, now one of the largest retailers in the UK, began as Michael Marks's Penny Bazaar in Leeds's open market in 1884 — a stall where everything cost a penny and the novel slogan "Don't ask the price — it's a penny!" made the retailer famous. The Royal Armouries Museum The Royal Armouries Museum, on the waterfront of the River Aire in Leeds, houses the national collection of arms and armour — one of the oldest museum collections in Britain, originally assembled at the Tower of London over five centuries. The collection moved to Leeds in 1996, into a purpose-built five-storey building on the Leeds waterfront. The museum displays over 70,000 objects spanning five galleries devoted to War, Tournament, Oriental Armour, Hunting, and Self-Defence, and includes some of the most spectacular examples of European armour from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as weapons, firearms, and ceremonial objects from across world history. Henry Moore Institute Henry Moore (1898–1986), one of the most celebrated sculptors of the 20th century, was born in Castleford, on the southeastern boundary of Leeds. Leeds has honoured this connection with the Henry Moore Institute — a leading international centre for the study of sculpture, which hosts exhibitions, research facilities, and a library — and with significant Moore sculptures in the permanent collection of Leeds Art Gallery. The Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park (both nearby) extend the region's claim to be the heartland of 20th-century British sculpture. Financial and Legal Hub Leeds is the largest financial and legal centre in the UK outside London, with over 30 major financial institutions, numerous law firms, and a large business services sector concentrated in the city centre. The city's financial district has grown significantly since the 1980s and 1990s, with major banks, insurance companies, and professional services firms choosing Leeds as their northern headquarters. First Direct (a major retail bank) is headquartered in Leeds, as are major legal firms serving the national and international market. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 812,000 residents. Leeds is moderately diverse: approximately 77% White, 8% South Asian, 4% Black, and 5% mixed or other ethnic groups. The city has two major universities — the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University — that together enroll over 60,000 students.
