Northumberland is a unitary authority and county in the far northeast of England, bordering Scotland to the north and County Durham to the south. Covering approximately 5,013 square kilometres, Northumberland is the largest county in England by area and, with a population of approximately 320,000 (2021 Census), one of the most sparsely populated, creating an extraordinary landscape of wild moorland, ancient coastline, medieval castles, and dark skies largely unspoiled by light pollution. History and Heritage Northumberland is among the most historically layered counties in England, having been at the frontier of Roman Britain, the cradle of early English Christianity, the boundary between England and Scotland, and one of the most fought-over landscapes in the British Isles. Hadrian's Wall, built on the orders of Emperor Hadrian between 122 and 128 AD to mark the northern frontier of the Roman Empire in Britain, stretches 117 kilometres from the Solway Firth in the west to Wallsend on the Tyne in the east, with approximately 84 miles passing through Northumberland. The wall — up to 6 metres high and 3 metres wide where preserved — was punctuated by forts, milecastles, and turrets. The best-preserved section runs through the dramatic central Northumberland crags (the Whin Sill), where sites such as Housesteads Fort (the most visited and best-preserved Roman fort in Britain), Vindolanda (where extraordinary wooden writing tablets have been excavated, providing unique evidence of everyday Roman life), and the Steel Rigg viewpoint are accessible to visitors. Hadrian's Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, connected to the Northumberland coast by a tidal causeway passable only at low tide, was the site of one of the most significant events in the history of English Christianity. In 635 AD, the Irish monk St Aidan founded a monastery on Lindisfarne at the invitation of the Northumbrian king Oswald, establishing a centre of learning and missionary activity that evangelised much of northern England. The Lindisfarne Gospels — an illuminated manuscript of the four Gospels created around 715 AD by the monk Eadfrith and decorated with extraordinary interlaced designs of breathtaking complexity — are among the greatest artistic achievements of early medieval Europe, now held by the British Library. The ruined Lindisfarne Priory (12th century) and the small castle (16th century, renovated by Edwin Lutyens) remain on the island. Castles and Border Landscape No county in England has as many castles as Northumberland, reflecting its role as the most contested borderland in Britain. Bamburgh Castle, on a dramatic basalt outcrop above a golden beach on the northeast coast, was the royal seat of the Northumbrian kings and is one of England's most photographed and recognisable castles. Alnwick Castle, the seat of the Percy family (Dukes of Northumberland) since 1309 and one of the largest inhabited castles in England, achieved worldwide recognition through its use as a filming location for Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter films and as the setting for Downton Abbey's exterior shots. The adjacent Alnwick Garden, created from 1997 by the current Duchess of Northumberland, is one of the most ambitious and visited new gardens created in England in the 20th century. Dark Skies and Natural Landscapes Northumberland International Dark Sky Park — covering approximately 1,500 square kilometres of the Northumberland National Park — is one of the largest areas of protected dark sky in Europe, designated by the International Dark-Sky Association in 2013. The combination of low population density, minimal light pollution, and clear Atlantic skies makes Northumberland one of the best places in England to observe stars, the Milky Way, and (in winter) the aurora borealis. Kielder Water, the largest reservoir in England by volume and surface area, is the centrepiece of Kielder Forest — the largest man-made forest in England — and is a popular destination for water sports, cycling, and astronomical observation. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 320,000 residents. Northumberland is among England's most White-British counties (approximately 97%) and has an older-than-average age profile, reflecting its rural character and limited urban employment.
