About Slough

Slough is a unitary authority in Berkshire, situated in the Thames Valley approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of central London and 3 miles (5 km) from Windsor Castle. With a population of approximately 164,000 (2021 Census), Slough is one of England's most ethnically diverse towns, an important commercial and logistics centre, and is home to an extraordinary array of historical firsts and cultural associations. History and Heritage Slough's history before the 20th century was dominated by the agricultural use of the rich Thames-side land. The town was a coaching stop on the road from London to Bath and Bristol. However, the most remarkable historical figure associated with Slough is William Herschel, the German-born British astronomer who lived and worked in Slough at Observatory House. On 13 March 1781, Herschel discovered the planet Uranus from his garden in Slough — the first new planet to be identified since ancient times, instantly doubling the known size of the solar system. Herschel subsequently built the largest telescope in the world in Slough's garden and continued to revolutionise understanding of the cosmos, discovering binary stars, the moons of Uranus and Saturn, and establishing the field of stellar astronomy. A blue plaque marks the site of his observatory. Slough Trading Estate Slough Trading Estate, opened in 1920 on the site of a wartime vehicle repair depot, is one of the oldest and most significant industrial and commercial trading estates in Europe. By mid-century it was one of the largest private trading estates in the world, employing over 20,000 people across hundreds of manufacturers. Among the companies that established themselves at Slough Trading Estate are Mars (the confectionery and pet food company — the Mars bar was produced at the Slough factory for many decades), Black & Decker, Johnson Controls, and a host of pharmaceutical and technology firms. Today the estate is home to over 400 companies employing around 17,000 people, and has evolved from heavy manufacturing toward an emphasis on pharmaceuticals, technology, and professional services. The modern Slough town centre has been the subject of significant regeneration, with the Heart Shopping Centre providing retail facilities and major transport improvements including a new station building. Literary and Cultural Significance Slough is famously associated with the poet Sir John Betjeman, whose 1937 poem "Slough" opened with the provocative lines "Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough! It isn't fit for humans now." The poem — actually a satirical critique of interwar commercial development and urban sprawl rather than a genuine wish for destruction — became one of the most discussed poems in 20th-century English literature and permanently attached the name of Slough to debates about aesthetics, modernism, and development in England. Slough gained fresh cultural prominence in the 21st century as the setting for the BBC television comedy series The Office (2001–2003), created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The Wernham Hogg paper company's fictional offices were set in Slough, and the series — subsequently adapted for numerous international markets — made Slough's name internationally recognised in popular culture. The Slough branch of Curry's/PC World, the Brunel Business Court, and various other local landmarks featured in the programme. Other notable inventions and firsts connected to Slough include: the first lollipop was invented by Bradley's ice cream company in Slough; the Letraset system of dry-transfer lettering was developed in Slough. Connectivity and Economy Slough's position — immediately south of Heathrow Airport, served by the Great Western Main Line, and now connected to the Elizabeth line (Crossrail) — makes it one of the best-connected towns in England. The Elizabeth line connection (open from 2022) enables direct trains from Slough to central London in approximately 20 minutes. Mars, O2, Nokia, Aware X, and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) headquarters are among major organisations based in Slough. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded 164,000 residents. Slough is one of the most ethnically diverse local authorities in England outside of London, with approximately 50% of residents identifying as non-White-British. Communities of South Asian origin (principally from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh) are the largest minority communities, and there are significant populations from across the world, reflecting historic patterns of Commonwealth and EU migration.
