About East Suffolk
East Suffolk is a local government district in Suffolk, East Anglia, formed in 2019 from the merger of Suffolk Coastal and Waveney districts. This extensive coastal district encompasses the towns of Lowestoft, Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Beccles, and Bungay within an area stretching from the North Sea coast to the Suffolk Heritage Coast and the Broads National Park fringe. The climate is maritime with mild winters, warm summers, moderate rainfall, and more sunshine than western areas, though coastal locations experience fresh sea breezes. Culturally, East Suffolk holds exceptional coastal heritage with Felixstowe as Britain's busiest container port, Lowestoft as the most easterly town and historic fishing port, and the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty attracting visitors to its beaches, heathlands, and bird reserves. The area preserves important heritage including Sutton Hoo (Anglo-Saxon royal burial site, National Trust), Framlingham Castle, Orford Castle, and the historic towns of Woodbridge, Beccles, and Bungay with their distinctive Suffolk character. Southwold remains one of England's most elegant seaside towns with its pier, lighthouse, and Adnams brewery. The district's northern areas extend into the Broads National Park with its unique wetland landscapes. Boundary GIS data for East Suffolk District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this extensive coastal district, supporting port operations at Felixstowe, and preserving the internationally significant heritage and landscapes of the Suffolk coast.
