About Wyre
Wyre is a local government district and borough in Lancashire, encompassing the coastal towns of Fleetwood, Thornton-Cleveleys, and Poulton-le-Fylde, along with the inland town of Garstang and numerous villages within the Fylde plain. This coastal district features sandy beaches, the Wyre estuary, and attractive countryside at the edge of the Forest of Bowland. The climate is maritime with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and fresh sea breezes typical of the Lancashire coast. Culturally, Wyre maintains strong identity with Fleetwood's planned Victorian seaside town heritage (designed by Decimus Burton, with its distinctive lighthouse and North Euston Hotel), Poulton-le-Fylde's historic market town character with its cobbled streets and medieval church, and Garstang's reputation as the world's first Fairtrade Town. The area preserves important heritage including Fleetwood's magnificent Victorian architecture, the Wyre Light (offshore lighthouse), and the remains of the fishing industry. Thornton-Cleveleys developed as a seaside resort with its promenade and sea defences while Cleveleys is known for its innovative sea defence scheme. The district's coastline offers sandy beaches and promenades while the Wyre estuary provides wildlife habitat. The Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty extends into the district's eastern parts offering spectacular walking and scenery. Garstang's farmers market and annual celebrations maintain rural traditions while the villages feature traditional Lancashire character with stone cottages and village pubs. Boundary GIS data for Wyre Borough Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, supporting coastal management, heritage preservation in Fleetwood and Poulton, and sustainable development in this diverse Lancashire coastal district.
