About North Northamptonshire
North Northamptonshire is a unitary authority area in Northamptonshire, formed in 2021 from the merger of Corby, East Northamptonshire, Kettering, and Wellingborough districts, encompassing the towns of Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough, Rushden, and Thrapston along with numerous villages within the Northamptonshire countryside. This diverse area features former steel town Corby's dramatic transformation, historic market towns, and rich industrial heritage from footwear and engineering. The climate is typical of the English Midlands with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and typical central England conditions. Culturally, North Northamptonshire maintains strong identity with Corby's unique heritage (developed as a steel town in the 1930s with significant Scottish migration, earning it the nickname 'Little Scotland', now undergoing major regeneration with the Corby Cube civic building and Willow Place shopping centre). The area preserves important heritage including Kirby Hall (spectacular Elizabethan country house ruin), Lyveden New Bield (National Trust, unfinished Elizabethan garden lodge), Boughton House ('the English Versailles', home of the Duke of Buccleuch), and the historic market towns of Kettering, Wellingborough, and Rushden with their Victorian and Edwardian architecture and shoe-making heritage (celebrated at the Rushden Museum and the Wellingborough Museum). The district's villages feature traditional Northamptonshire ironstone cottages while the River Nene provides riverside walks and the Nene Way long-distance path. Rockingham Castle and Barnwell Country Park add to the area's attractions. Corby's modern role as a distribution and logistics centre (with its position on the A14) and Kettering's excellent rail links to London support economic growth while the historic market towns maintain their character. The annual Corby Highland Gathering celebrates the town's Scottish heritage while the area's industrial past is being transformed through regeneration. Boundary GIS data for North Northamptonshire Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, supporting post-industrial regeneration in Corby, heritage preservation at Kirby Hall and Lyveden, and sustainable development in this diverse Northamptonshire area.
