About Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole
Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) is a unitary authority area in Dorset, formed in 2019 from the merger of the former unitary authorities of Bournemouth and Poole along with the Christchurch district. This coastal conurbation encompasses the seaside resort of Bournemouth, the historic port of Poole, the historic town of Christchurch, and their suburbs, forming one of the UK's most popular coastal destinations. The climate is one of the mildest and sunniest in the UK, with Bournemouth consistently ranking among the sunniest places, benefiting from its south coast position and sheltered bay. Culturally, BCP maintains strong identity with Bournemouth's classic seaside resort character (its seven miles of sandy beaches, Victorian pier, the BIC (Bournemouth International Centre), the Pavilion Theatre, and its reputation as a conference and entertainment destination). The area preserves exceptional heritage including Poole's magnificent natural harbour (one of the world's largest, with its historic quay, the Poole Pottery, and the RNLI headquarters), Christchurch's magnificent Priory (one of England's longest parish churches) and its Norman castle ruins, and the elegant architecture of the Victorian and Edwardian resorts. Sandbanks (in Poole) is one of the most expensive residential areas in the world outside London, famous for its exclusive properties and beautiful beach. Bournemouth's gardens and chines (wooded ravines leading to the sea) are a unique feature, while the Bournemouth Air Festival attracts huge crowds annually. Poole Harbour offers sailing, watersports, and access to Brownsea Island (National Trust, birthplace of the Scout movement). Christchurch Harbour and the rivers Stour and Avon provide beautiful scenery and wildlife. The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Arts University Bournemouth (specialising in creative arts and media) add to the area's cultural life. The conurbation's excellent transport links (including Bournemouth Airport and mainline railway to London) support its role as a major tourism and residential destination. Boundary GIS data for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this coastal conurbation, preserving the unique character of the three towns, protecting the harbour and coastline, and supporting sustainable tourism and development.
