About Telford and Wrekin
Telford and Wrekin is a unitary authority in Shropshire, formed in 1998, encompassing the New Town of Telford (one of the UK's largest New Towns, designated 1968), the historic town of Wellington, and the villages of the Wrekin area. This diverse area features the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site (birthplace of the Industrial Revolution), the Wrekin hill (iconic Shropshire landmark), and extensive postwar planned development. The climate is typical of the West Midlands with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and typical central England conditions. Culturally, Telford and Wrekin holds world significance with the Ironbridge Gorge (UNESCO World Heritage Site, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, where the first iron bridge was built (1779), with its ten museums including Blists Hill Victorian Town, the Museum of the Gorge, and Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron). The area preserves exceptional heritage including Buildwas Abbey (Cistercian abbey ruins), the Wrekin (the iconic hill with its Iron Age hillfort and spectacular views across Shropshire), and the historic buildings of Wellington and the surrounding villages. Telford New Town (named after the engineer Thomas Telford) represents 20th-century planning with its grid system, town centre (including the Telford Shopping Centre and the international centre), and neighbourhoods with their own identities. The Ironbridge Gorge museums attract visitors from worldwide, telling the story of the Industrial Revolution. The area's industrial heritage includes the Coalport China Museum and the Jackfield Tile Museum. The Telford Steam Railway (heritage line) adds to the attractions. The Wrekin offers walking and panoramic views while the Shropshire countryside provides green space. Telford's modern role as a commercial and retail centre includes the headquarters of numerous companies and excellent transport links (including M54). The district's unique combination of World Heritage industrial archaeology and modern New Town development creates a distinctive character. Boundary GIS data for Telford and Wrekin Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this World Heritage site, preserving the Ironbridge Gorge's unique heritage, and supporting the New Town's continued development.
