About Kingston upon Hull, City of
Kingston upon Hull (usually called Hull) is a unitary authority and city in the East Riding of Yorkshire, formed in 1996, a historic port city on the Humber estuary with a rich maritime heritage, Victorian old town, and modern role as a cultural and economic centre. This dynamic city encompasses the old town, the marina, the university, and diverse neighbourhoods including the Avenues and Beverley Road. The climate is typical of eastern England with relatively low rainfall, cool winters, warm summers, and fresh sea breezes from the Humber. Culturally, Hull holds exceptional heritage significance as UK City of Culture 2017, which transformed the city's cultural landscape and reputation. The area preserves exceptional heritage including the Old Town (with its cobbled streets, historic buildings including Wilberforce House (birthplace of the slavery abolitionist William Wilberforce, now a museum), the Streetlife Museum, and the Maritime Museum). The city's maritime heritage is celebrated at the Hull Maritime Museum and the Arctic Corsair (trawler museum). Hull's modern cultural venues include The Deep (one of the UK's most spectacular aquariums, housed in a dramatic building at the confluence of the Hull and Humber), the Hull Truck Theatre, the Hull New Theatre, and the Humber Street Gallery. The University of Hull and Hull College contribute to educational life. Hull's famous son, the poet Philip Larkin, is celebrated at the university and the city. The city's fishing heritage (once one of the UK's major fishing ports) is commemorated at the Hessle Road area. The Humber estuary provides important bird habitats and the Humber Bridge (one of the world's longest suspension bridges) connects to Lincolnshire. Hull's old town and marina (converted from the old dock) offer attractive waterfront. The city's excellent transport links (including mainline railway to London and the M62 corridor) support its economic role. Hull's strong community identity and its recent cultural renaissance make it one of the UK's most distinctive cities. Boundary GIS data for Hull City Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this historic port city, preserving its maritime heritage and Wilberforce legacy, supporting its cultural role, and maintaining its unique character.
